The beguinage "Groot Begijnhof"

Groot Begijnhof Gent

2.2km from Villa Emma is the beguinage "Groot Begijnhof".  It was built between 1873 - 1874 following a conflict between the civil and ecclesiastical authorities in Ghent in order to house more than 600 beguines being displaced from the beguinage "St. Elisabeth Begijnhof" in central Ghent which was dismantled shortly after.

A number of streets were laid out around a central square with a neo-Gothic chapel. The "Groot Begijnhof" is a wonderful place for a quiet stroll and a picnic on a sunny day.
